The only durable sense of success is if you’ve followed your calling.
Jim Harrison
Many of us go through life feeling unfulfilled and wondering if our life has a purpose. Simply put, we’re just not happy with what we do. If you find yourself in this position then it might be time to take a look at finding your life calling.
So, what’s a calling? – you may ask. It’s the motivation behind your actions. The thing that makes the challenges in your life easier to overcome. Your life calling is a way of connecting with the things that matter to you. And, giving them an outlet in your work and career is the key to a happier and more fulfilling life.
But, finding your life calling is much more of an art than a science.
Figure Out What Makes You Happy
When searching for your calling, it’s easy to focus outward. Yet, the most important step is to look inward at the things that make you happy. After all, it’s your calling.
Think about what gives you energy. What people energize you? What environments make you buzz? What activities make you feel joyful and alive?
Next, think about the things that drain your energy. Perhaps, it’s spending long hours at a desk or being told how to do your job. Are there people or places that make you miserable? Finding your happiness means getting rid of things that make you unhappy.
Understand Where Your Talents Lie
Passion without skill can turn into a side hobby. So, leveraging your talents can help take your passion from a pastime to a career.
But, how do you identify your talents?
Many of us have difficulty admitting that we have talents. Yet, we all have unique abilities we’re born with or acquired through life experiences. These skills set us apart from everyone else and are the power-ups that can help us level up in life.
Ask yourself the following questions:
– What do you like doing because it feels easy?
– What can you do better than anyone you know?
– What comes naturally to you?
Talk to your colleagues, family and friends. Your talents may seem like trivial and easy skills. But, getting others’ perspectives can help you see the real uniqueness of your talents.
Give Your Life Calling An Outlet In Your Career
Your job is the source of your financial safety and stability. It’s easy to get into a mindset of not wanting to rock the boat. Yet, real magic happens when your job grows at the intersection of your passions and talents. This creates a foundation for career success.
So, does this mean you need to quit your job in search of your life calling?
Not necessarily. First, try thinking about how you can manifest the things you love most in the work you already do. For me, it was taking my passion for mentoring and finding ways to apply it in my tech career. You could also explore a volunteer opportunity or help out on a related project.
If you do decide it’s time for a job or career change, think of how you can leverage your talents to pursue your life calling. Using the skills you’re good at will give you a solid foundation in your new venture.
Finding your life calling takes dedication, hard work, and patience. But if you understand yourself, what makes you happy, and where you can perform well, you’ll be well on your way. There is no template for finding your calling. But, using the tips above will get you started on a rewarding journey.
